Book Blurb:

Gabriel's Daughters wrestles with issues of polygamy, homosexuality, and modernity through the
lives of the large, loving, and polygamous Martin family. The story is told primarily through the eyes of Zina Martin, a young girl who, upon discovering she is impregnated by her "sterile" teacher—and will soon be married off to a man three times her age— escapes the enclosed polygamous town of Gabriel's Landing, Utah.

Zina then embarks on a journey full of self-discovery, yet she can never completely escape the longing she has for her family and even the controversial and outdated lifestyle she once lived. Through both tears and triumph, Jensen has crafted a moving story that not only acts as insightful social commentary but also prompts readers to reevaluate their lives.

Snippet Chain!!! (I love these!!!)

Snippet #8

Cyrus was known as a studious and solemn person, upright and obedient to the Principle. He performed many acts of generosity that few people knew about; boxes of potatoes, carrots and apples, and clothes that just happened to fit the children of a particular family would often appear on doorsteps of households in need. Cyrus was Joshuas oldest friend, and Zina suspected that her father sometimes shared his own worries with Cyrus instead of burdening his wives.
Before these unannounced visits, her mother would suggest that Zina change her dress and freshen up. The sister wives would exchange knowing looks they thought she didnt notice, but one night Zina realized with a start what was happening. Cyrus Hamilton was asking her father if he could court her. Courtship in Gabriels Landing was not a time for dating, to become acquainted and decide if a couple loved each other or were even compatible; it was a mere formality consisting of a few awkward, supervised visits between the man and his prospective bride before the inevitable arranged marriage.
To Zina, Cyrus was a loyal family friend; an honorary uncle, he sometimes called himself in jest, and she could not think of him in any other way. No matter how kind and good and wise Cyrus was, Zina knew she could not marry him. She could not share his bed and the duties that went with it.
One day after school, Joshua called her into his study and Zina was certain he would tell her of her upcoming courtship and marriage to Cyrus. She could not summon the courage to look into her fathers eyes. Her heart pounded and she felt a thin trickle of sweat between her shoulder blades. She knew Joshua was searching her face, which she would not turn upward, lest he guess her true feelings from her expression.

Book Tour: Wings by Pete Abela

Book Blurb:

Wings is a stirring, cross-generational account of the love of flying inspired by the true story of Walt, a WWII RAF pilot, and his grandson Scott who has his sights set on becoming a modern day airline pilot. Wings weaves together two tales: one set in war-torn northern England, and the other set in the modern-day Illawarra region of New South Wales. As Scott learns about the sacrifices and difficulties Walt overcame to take to the sky, he battles his own challenges in order to follow his dream. As Scott progresses, his grandfather declines – Walt loses his wife, his sight and his hearing – but throughout these difficulties is still there to offer support and encouragement. In following Scott's progress towards his dream, Walt also keeps alive the wonder of his own youth. With insights into the modern day aviation scene and life in the Royal Air Force of World War II, this is a must for anyone who has an interest in history, aviation or simply an old fashioned love story.

Author Bio:

Pete heralds from the city of Wollongong, just south of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia, where he lives with his wife and four kids. His love of reading eventually led him to take up writing, a difficult task which presents rewards and challenges in equal measure. A Painted Room is Pete’s second book, and follows his debut novel, Wings (2012).

When he’s not working, reading, writing or enjoying the company of his family, Pete likes to sneak away for a bit of exercise – either tennis, golf or a refreshing swim.

You can find more about Pete at his website and blog (http://peteabela.com). The blog contains a number of bad jokes and puns. You have been warned.

I get to start the snippet chain! Wooohooo!!!

SNIPPET #1
The nose of the Cessna swung around, straightening as it lined up with the runway. Scott leaned forward, attempting to judge the distance to the airport. He was concentrating fiercely; after all, this was the first time he’d tried a landing without someone by his side giving him directions.
He eased back the throttle and adjusted the flaps. A gust of wind caught the plane and the right wing rose as the left side dropped. He looked down at the instruments and adjusted the rudder, restoring the aircraft to level flight.
When he looked up again, he was shocked to see how rapidly the runway had come closer in the few seconds required to level the plane. “Too high,” he muttered to himself, as he pushed the throttle forward, dropping the nose toward the ground. The airspeed indicator increased as the altimeter – which showed his height – dropped. He looked up again, and realised his mistake. “Too low,” he groaned as he pulled the control stick back, raising the nose. “And too fast,” he realised as the ground rushed toward him.
He was conscious that he had made a crazy, lurching descent and was still travelling too fast. He’d also dropped too far and was now lower than the ideal flight path, skimming just above the ground, well short of the runway. He thought about his options: Pull up and go around? Or try to land it anyway?

He decided to fly another circuit and make a new approach when his mother’s authoritative voice interrupted his thoughts. “We’re going to Grandma and Grandad’s place, so get off the computer, Scott. Now.”
